UAE Hospitals Report Huge Increase in Women Coming Forward for Cancer Screenings

Hospitals and charities in the UAE are reporting a significant increase in the number of women coming forward for breast cancer screenings. With over 4,500 new cancer cases reported annually in the UAE, breast cancer remains the most common among women, accounting for 21% of all cancer cases. However, early detection has greatly improved survival rates, with approximately 89% of women surviving five years post-diagnosis.

Screening Campaigns in Full Swing

Hundreds of screening sessions are being held throughout October, as hospitals and charities aim to increase awareness and early detection. Dr. Brian Mtemererwa, medical director at Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital, emphasized the importance of early detection for improving survival rates and outcomes. Medcare’s third-year breast cancer campaign aims to screen 700 women this month, providing affordable and accessible mammograms, consultation with experts, and reducing hesitation among women to get screened.

Increased Participation and Results

Since the campaign started in 2021, the number of women taking mammograms has tripled. Last year, 10% of the 504 women screened were found to have breast abnormalities that required further inspection. Almost 30% showed minor benign conditions, such as clustered calcifications and fibroadenomas. These women were advised to undergo biopsies and regular follow-up.

National Goals and Accessibility

Reducing cancer-related deaths is a key goal of the UAE National Agenda. In support of this, the Emirates Health Services (EHS) is offering free screenings for women aged 40 and above at Saqr Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah until November 26. Charities are also contributing to improving access, offering screenings at fixed and mobile clinics throughout the UAE.

Charity Support

The Friends of Cancer Patient charity is running screenings across 8 fixed clinics and more than 100 mobile clinics throughout the country from October 11 to 30. Locations include Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain.
