Qatar participated in the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), held in New York. The meeting, themed “Investing in the present and securing our future together,” focused on accelerating global, regional, and national actions to combat AMR.
Qatar’s Commitment to AMR
Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari, Qatar’s Minister of Public Health, represented the country at the meeting. She affirmed Qatar’s commitment to addressing the challenges of antimicrobial resistance both regionally and internationally.
In her speech, Dr. Al Kuwari welcomed the political declaration resulting from the meeting. She highlighted Qatar’s efforts in launching its third National Health Strategy 2024-2030, which aims to improve the health and well-being of the Qatari population and aligns with the country’s Vision 2030.
National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance
Qatar has been addressing antimicrobial resistance since 2019 with the launch of its National Action Plan on AMR, which covers key sectors such as human health, environment, food safety, and animal health. This plan aims to minimize AMR to the lowest possible level through programs on infection control, antimicrobial use optimization, and research investments.
Dr. Al Kuwari emphasized that Qatar continues to take necessary measures to reduce AMR risks, especially among vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
Global Impact
The United Nations considers AMR a major global threat to public health, food security, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. Qatar’s National Action Plan plays a vital role in addressing this challenge.
